I love the enthusiasm and optimism of Art Deco with its stylised animal, flower and fountain motifs and its vivid images inspired by the like of dancing or modern technology. Art Deco was the predominant style of the inter-war era of the 1920s and 1930s and it permeated all areas of art and design from exclusive objet dart to industrially designed objects. It was the last of the great styles to evolve in the West and with its geometric, stylised and abstract approach to design struck a cord with the critics and public alike. Unlike the souless mass market corporate design of today Art Deco was elegant, stylish and chic (if sometimes a little gaudy) and thats why I love this exuberant total style.

what defines Art Deco?

I know a bit about deco, such that I can walk in an antique/collectibles shop and find deco objects. But what is the movement really about?

When I think of Art Deco I think of South Beach Blvd, old radios, Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Empire State Building.

What about Art Nouveau? Is it a cousin of deco?

Weird question, but do you think Stanly Kubrick was into art deco? I feel like several of his movies have art deco/futurism sets, objects, design, furniture, etc.

I'm exploring art deco more deliberately right now because the 2006 Burning Man theme will have some deco overtones, including The Man being on a deco-inspired structure.

Wanting to study art deco

Hi All,

I'm new to this tribe and wanted to say "Hello." I'm based in Victoria, BC and I'm a practicing artist and writer. I have a huge interest in art deco, especially paintings, the streamliners, and sculpture depicting the human figure.

I intend to create an ongoing series of figures, paintings and sculptures in the art deco style and I'm looking for as many resources as I can find. In addition, if I could find some art techniques to help me get a feeling for the style, that would be awesome. Any information, photos, drawings, resources, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

an exhibit at the San Francisco Public Library
Main Branch, Fourth Floor, Steve Silver Beach Blanket Babylon Music Center

"Homage to Lulu: 100 Years of Louise Brooks" celebrates the centenary of the silent film star Louise Brooks (1906 - 1985). Now considered an icon of the Jazz Age, Brooks' popularity today rivals that of her more celebrated contemporaries. On display are dozens of vintage objects - including books, magazines, sheet music, postcards,and related ephemera - which tell the story of her life and films.

Highlights include American and French photoplay editions (the movie tie-in editions of the 1920's), an editorial comic strip explaining the scandalous circumstances behind Brooks' affair with Charlie Chaplin, Brooks' inspired novels, a jumbo-size lobby card, and a full-page newspaper advertisement for "Show Girl" - the Brooks-inspired novel which became a hit stage play and the long-running comic strip "Dixie Dugan."

This exhibit - organized by Thomas Gladysz and the San Francisco-based Louise Brooks Society - coincides with many other events taking place around the San Francisco Bay Area and the world.

Appraisal for an Art Deco Bar

Hi,
I have a 1930s art deco cabinet bar. I want to sell it, but I'm not sure what it's worth?
It's 4' x 4'. I think it's burl wood, but not sure. Very pretty and in good condition.
If anyone can give me a price range, that would be great. Or someone who
wants to buy it from me in the LA area. I'm also selling a 1910 Venetian Mirror,
vintage clothes, and a wood carved 1940s mirror.

Just wondering if anybody here is a member of any sort of Art Deco Societies. I know that there is one in the SF Bay Area that seems to be pretty active with events and tours and such. I was thinking of joining. Anbody have any thoughts...?

Last day for Art Deco at Legion of Honor

Today- July 5th- is the last day of the Art Deco Exhibition at the Legion of Honor in SF. I highly recommend going if you have not already. So cool to see with my own eyes so many things I've read about and seen pictures of in books. Anyone else already been? What did you think?
